The Calder Shield is a historic Territory Cricket Competition reintroduced into NT Cricket’s competition calendar in October, 2011.
Since its inception, the Calder Shield has taken many different formats and was created to provide players an opportunity to play representative cricket within the Territory.
At the height of the competition in the early 1990’s, teams were comprised from Darwin, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Katherine, Jabiru, Gove, Groote Eylandt and the NT U/19’s and was considered an instrumental part of player development.
In 2011, the Calder Shield is reintroduced as a key step in the NT Cricket Pathway, from club cricket to Northern Territory representative cricket, namely representation in NT Cricket’s senior men’s team, NT Strike.
The 2011 program is a Tri Series of 50 over games between two Top End teams- one comprising players from Tracy Village, Nightcliff, Waratahs and Darwin and the other comprising players from Katherine, Southern Districts, Palmerston and Pint, and an Alice Springs and Barkley Region team comprising players from Rovers, West, Federals, RSL Works, Tennant Creek and Ayers Rock.
Darwin will host the event in October this year and will rotate to Alice Springs every three years.
The reinstatement of the Calder Shield was made possible via the generous funding support from the Kerry Packer Foundation.
