Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the Alice Springs Cricket Association (ASCA) held the 2019/20 Awards Night via a Facebook live stream on Thursday 9 April.

West Cricket Club’s Sanath Ranjan was awarded the Wapper Medal, Alice Springs Cricket Association’s most prestigious award. Named after Jarrod Wapper, the Wapper Medal is the Best and Fairest Award for the Carlton Mid A Grade competition as determined by the umpires who award votes to the players they deem ‘Best and Fairest’ for each game throughout the season.

Ranjan polled in eight games over the season finishing with a total of 23 points. With only four rounds remaining in the season, Ranjan was sitting just two points clear of Dan Donaldson and seven points clear of youngster Banjo Waring.

Ranjan then polled maximum votes in two of the four remaining rounds to win the medal five points ahead of Donaldson and six points ahead of Waring, who had a late surge polling seven points in the final four rounds.

It was clear why Donaldson and Waring polled well in the Wapper Medal count, with Donaldson taking home the Carlton MID A Grade Bowling Average award with 31 wickets @ 6.74 and Waring the Carlton MID A Grade Bating Aggregate & Average award with 548 runs and a 60.89 average.

Ranjan also took home the Men’s Senior Cricketer Award while his club, West Cricket Club, claimed the Spirit of Cricket Award.

Federal Ashbuild Cricket Club’s Cooper Blanch was awarded the Division 1 Champion Player and Boy’s Junior Cricketer of the Year after an outstanding season. Blanch scored 989 runs this season across juniors (Division 1) and seniors, was the C grade leading run scorer in the T20 competition and scored close to 600 runs in the junior competition, an outstanding effort by the 14 year old.

Federal Asbuild Cricket Club were named ASCA Club Champions for the second year running and Vicki Hutchinson was awarded ASCA Volunteer of the Year for her outstanding contribution to cricket in the Red Centre.

Sandy Warner from Complete Constructions Works backed up her 2018/19 season effort taking home both the Women’s Competition bowling aggregate and average award and Jenny Kroker Women’s Cricketer of the Year for a second year running.

ASCA President Bruce Walker thanked Carlton Mid, Alice Springs Town Council, Intersport and Yeperenye Shopping Centre in his address and congratulated all the award winners of their achievements.
