Adam Trunks, NT Coaching Talent and Pathways Specialist explains:
“Our NT squad is made up of some very talented NT players, most of whom are playing interstate during the southern cricket season to gain further development. Southern Districts trio, Daniel McKell, Daniel Mylius & Adi Dave are currently playing in Adelaide while Waratah Andrew Richards is playing In Brisbane. The experience our local players gain from their interstate season will certainly help them prepare for the National Championships.
Trunks expects the team to be competitive again this year, with the addition of some interstate talent.
“The NT team is also made up of several Interstate players who will bring strength and depth to our squad. Jack James from NSW will support the NT and has previously played for PINT Cricket Club in Darwin. He has also played for the Southern Storm in the Strike League and was part of the NT the NT Emerging Players Team. Our interstate players will add some top order strength to the batting line up along with some extra pace bowling options to work alongside Daniel McKell and Wilson Ryan.
NT Cricket CEO, Joel Morrison explains the importance of balancing the opportunity for our NT players to gain exposure and experience through the National Championships, with the requirement to bolster the squad through the use of interstate players.
"The competition for players at the national championships is fierce and the standard of cricket across Australia is incredibly strong, so NT Cricket has the same responsibility as every other State and Territory to submit the strongest possible team.
"What this means for us in practice, is that we are required to compare all our NT players with players from around the country who were overlooked for initial selection and as ourselves 'are all of our players of equal or better standard than those who missed out?'. If the answer is no, we are required to utilise supplementary players as the purpose of the National Championships is to showcase and expose the best 130 players in the country.
"With the NT making up 1% of Australia's population, it's naturally going to be a challenge for us to produce 13 (or 10%) of the best 130 players in the country, but this is exactly what we aim to do. However the depth of our playing group fluctuates from year to year, as is the case in all States and Territories, and this year our Under 19 men's team includes six players who are not from the NT, or who haven't played in the NT before.
"The inclusion of supplementary players has significant benefits for our NT team though, as our players have the opportunity to play and train alongside some outstanding talent from across the country, helping to further their development and education.
