NT and Cricket Australia XI met in Round 8 at the Cricket Australia Under 18 Female National Championships. The match was a 50-overs format played at Ingamells Oval, near Launceston.
CA won the toss and elected to bowl and at the 20-over mark, the NT top order batting was struggling at 4-40. Skipper and NT batting mainstay, Jessica Bradley, was patient but became one of CA leg-spinner Amy Smith’s three early wickets. However, Eliza Barnett batting at four, settled down and was left at the end on a solid 37 n.o.
The Territory opened the bowling with leg-spinner Zoe Valencic and her early wicket was due reward for a courageous move. A run-out a short time later was overshadowed by a near half-century third wicket partnership and CA were on their way chasing the meagre NT total.
But step up Valencic who had the dangerous Amy Smith stumped by ‘keeper Ella Anderson and fellow leggie, Hannah Wilson, and the CA XI were suddenly 8-94 with only the tail remaining. It was enough, and the Territory went down by two wickets.
Cricket Australia XI: 8-103 (Amy Smith 32; Zoe Valencic 2-20) d Northern Territory: 10-102 (Eliza Barnett 37 n.o.; Amy Smith 3-16).
