Following the announcement made by CA this morning, NT Cricket supports the decision to cancel the 2020/21 Under 19 National Championships scheduled for April given the ongoing uncertainty caused by COVID-19.

The Northern Territory Under 19 squad have been advised of the cancellation and understand the decision was based on what was best for the health of the players and support staff.

The 2021/22 Under 19 National Championships have been scheduled for December later this year and the Northern Territory Pathways program will adjust accordingly for the players affected.

Northern Territory Cricket CEO Joel Morrison said while the decision is disappointing for those involved, the announcement wasn’t unexpected following the previous cancellation of other national championships over summer.

“Our players and support staff are understandably disappointed that the championships aren’t able to proceed on this occasion, however the decision didn’t come as a total surprise given the challenges presented by the fluid nature of the COVID-19 landscape.

“We are fortunate that 2021 is shaping up to be a big year for cricket in the Top End, so our attention now turns to supporting player development through club cricket and NT Cricket’s development programs across the upcoming season,” said Morrison.
