Archie McCormick (Waratah Cricket Club) will lead the Northern Territory at the Cricket Australia (CA) Under-17 Male National Championships to be held in Ballarat, VIC between 4 – 11 January 2024.
McCormick, who captained the NT Junior Strike League team earlier in the year, returns for his second Under 17 National Championships and is excited about the opportunity to lead his team.
“We have a really good group of players who all get along well.
“We all play with and against each other, so we know our strengths and have the confidence to count on each other.
“We've also got a really good coaching staff will a lot of experience so it should be a good championships for the Territory,” said McCormick.
The NT Squad includes 6 players returning for their second Under 17 National Championships including tall right arm bowler Nicholas Fleming (Nightcliff Cricket Club) who got some additional experience as part of the U19s Squad who recently competed in Albury.
Cadell McMahon (Palmerston Cricket Club) will pull on the keeping gloves once again, joined by Palmerston teammate and leg spinner Rehaan Sundar.
Following in the steps of his first-class cricketing Father (Brad) and Uncle (Mark), James Hatton (Nightcliff Cricket Club) continues the tradition of having the Hatton name in Under 17s representative cricket. The tall medium pace bowler and top order bat is an accomplished allrounder set to make his mark this year.
After making their Darwin & Districts Cricket Competition Premier Grade debuts in the 2023 season, Max Menzies (Darwin Cricket Club) and Brody Robinson (PINT Cricket Club) bring strength and experience to the team’s bowling line up which is further enhanced with Sam Barker (Southern Districts Cricket Club), Matthew St Clair (Southern Districts Cricket Club) and Mithuru Perera (Waratah Cricket Club) who are ready for their first taste of U17s age group cricket.
All-rounders Ralph Stephens (Darwin Cricket Club), Dhruv Shandilya (Tracy Village Cricket Club) and Lucas Rowlands (Tracy Village Cricket Club) all bring strength to the middle order and sound cricket knowledge.
Alice Springs will be represented at the Championships by Federal Cricket Club’s Sam Rumpff, coming into the tournament in form from the Alice Springs season with a diverse skill set as an attacking batsman and ability to put on the keeping gloves if required.
The Squad will be coached by Anthony Judd (Head Coach), with Karl Mayne (Assistant Coach) and Dylan Slater (Assistant Coach) supporting the Southern Districts Head Coach.
Judd is a highly experienced Level 3 Coach who led Scotland’s National Men’s Team from 2003-2004, winning the ICC Intercontinental Cup during that time. Judd also served as Assistant Coach of Tasmania Tigers for five years under cricket mastermind Greg Shipperd, and he brings a level of coaching pedigree and knowledge that will undoubtedly benefit the young NT players.
Judd said these National Championships are a great opportunity for players to go away and play against kids of the same age from all around the country and represent the Territory.
“As a group we have been focusing on our strengths and how to play to the best of our ability. We aren’t going to the Championships hoping to do well, we are going there wanting to compete.
“Learning about being competitive and how we will take it to opposition teams will give us the best chance of being successful.
“There is always a challenge in training out of season for a lot of the team but we are fortunate to have indoor facilities and the ability to adapt, a trait which will treat us well knowing we will need to adapt to the conditions and weather, Victoria in January can be terribly hot or absolutely freezing,” said Judd.
