Australia to Launch World Cup Defence Preparations in Top End

The Australia Women’s Cricket Team will begin preparations for its 50 Over World Cup defence with a five-day camp in the Northern Territory from 25-30 May

The side’s visit to the Top End will include a cricket clinic at DXC Arena, Darwin on Monday 26 May, as well as a two-day trip to Kakadu as part of the team’s commitment to learning about and celebrating Indigenous culture.

Australia will look to defend its title at the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup in India later this year having claimed a record seventh 50-over crown in New Zealand in 2022.

In the 50-over format of the game, the Australian Women’s Team have won more World Cups than all other teams combined—capturing the 1978, 1982, 1988, 1997, 2005, 2013 and 2022 titles. They have achieved similarly emphatic success in T20 cricket by winning the ICC Women's T20 World Cup in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2020 and 2023.

The Women’s Team will be the second Australian Cricket Team to visit Darwin this year, with the Australian Men’s Cricketers with an Intellectual Disability (ID) Team completing a week long training camp earlier this month, marking a huge year for cricket in the NT with the Australian Men’s Team scheduled to take on South Africa in two T20Is in August.

Australia Women’s Team Head Coach, Shelley Nitschke said:

“The players are returning from a well-earned break after a big summer and we’re looking forward to getting back together in the Top End later this month.

“It’s an important camp for us as we begin preparations and really set the scene for the upcoming season which includes a World Cup and home multi-format series against India.

“We’re all really looking forward to the trip to Kakadu as an opportunity to educate ourselves on the Indigenous culture in the region and thank NT Cricket in making the whole week possible.”

Northern Territory Cricket Head of Cricket, Nick Winter said:

“It’s exciting to welcome a second Australian team here in less than a month and we’re thrilled to have Alyssa Healy and her side on hand to inspire our next generation of young female cricketers.

“These athletes are incredible role models and it’s a tremendous opportunity for us to help connect them with the local community.”

Northern Territory Cricket CEO, Gavin Dovey said:

“We’re thrilled the world champion Australian Women’s Team has chosen the Northern Territory as the location to kick off its World Cup preparations.

“2025 is an unprecedented year for cricket in the Top End, and the Australian Women’s Team’s arrival this month further illustrates the incredible winter cricket opportunity that exists here in the Northern Territory.”
