Day four of the Kookaburra Junior Girls Strike League saw Victoria Big Cats claim their third win of the competition — and their second in the 50-over format — with a seven-wicket victory over the Northern Territory.
After winning the toss, the Big Cats elected to bowl first and found some immediate success, with the Territorian’s losing quick wickets and slumping to 4/9.
A fightback from Palmerston’s Naomi McMahon (17), Federal’s Hargun Johal (26) and Waratah’s Abbey Warton (32) saw the NT eventually dismissed for 103 in the 43rd over, with Waratah’s Alice Caldow (2/5) and Evelyn Niedzwiedzki (4/10) the main wicket takers.
In reply, Victoria opener Alice Caldow (43) set up the run chase with another strong performance, while she had support from Clare Finger (25*) and Lucy Simpson (11). In her first game of the Kookaburra Junior Girls Strike League, Pints Abbie Halvorsen (2/23) took two wickets and impressed with her leg spin, while Palmerston’s Sophie Cameron (1/3) also took a wicket and showcased the young talent coming through Darwin & Districts Cricket Competition’s.
With the gloves, Palmerston’s Naomi McMahon took a sharp stumping and also claimed two catches, however the Big Cats eventually reached the target in the 27th over, with the score 3/104.
The Kookaburra Junior Girls Strike League wraps up on Friday at Cazalys Arena with the final match played in the T20 format.
