NT Cricket congratulates 16-year-old Harrison Johnny on his selection in the third annual Cricket Australia and Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) National Indigenous Cricket Training Camp, to be held at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from 20–24 October.
Johnny becomes the first and youngest male Indigenous Territorian ever selected in the training camp and tops off an impressive year for the proud Garawa and Waanyi teenager.
The training camp aims to foster and grow opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cricketing talent, increase opportunities for players from both cultures, and ease transitions through the pathway process.
Harrison was first recognised for his potential earlier this year during the Northern Territory’s 2025 Imparja Cup, the oldest and largest Indigenous cricket carnival in Australia. Harrison’s Imparja Cup performances earning him immediate selection in the Northern Territory squad for the 2025 National Indigenous Cricket Championships (NICC) held in Mackay.
Harrison’s journey is a great example of what can be achieved by grabbing opportunity with both hands, and his story highlights the opportunities available to young Indigenous players through Cricket Australia and NT Cricket’s pathway programs.
Cricket Australia Head of Cricket, James Allsopp, said the camp plays an important role in supporting Indigenous cricketers.
"We are committed to ensuring more Aboriginal and Torries Strait Islanders enter our elite pathways and this camp will provide important experience and exposure for talented young players as they continue their careers." Allsopp said.
NT Cricket Pathways and Talent Development Coach Trent Keep said Harrison’s selection highlights what’s possible when players are given the chance to develop through the pathway.
"Harrison is a great example of what can happen when natural ability meets opportunity," Keep said.
"His selection for the National Indigenous Cricket Training Camp at the MCG is another step in his development. It’s also a reminder to other young Indigenous players that the journey from local cricket to national representation can begin right here in the NT."
The National Indigenous Cricket Training Camp will bring together some of the country’s most promising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cricketers for five days of coaching, cultural connection and leadership development.
