Tom Menzies has been selected in Australia's Under 19 squad
Menzies Makes Australian U19 Squad For Tour of England
Tom Menzies joins the list Territorians to be selected in an Australia U19s Squad, following in the footsteps of the likes of Tom Andrews, Kane Richardson, Ken Skewes and Ken Vowles.
Cricket Australia announced the Australian U19s Squad today, with 16 players selected for a multi-format Tour of England that will include 5x ODIs and 2x 4-Day Fixtures through August and September.
Menzies, who plays local club cricket for the Darwin Cricket Club, has represented the NT at five National Championships (Under 19 and Under 17 level) and three School Sport Australia National Championships at Under 12 level and has been selected to play for the NT Strike in the upcoming CDU Men’s Top End T20 Series.
When receiving the selection news from NT Cricket's Head of Cricket Darren Treumer, Tom, sitting alongside his parents, said it was a big surprise.
"I didn't really know how to feel at the time, it was a big shock.
Now it has started to sink in I'm just really excited and can't wait to pull on the green and gold and represent my country and the Territory"
Darren Treumer said the selection of Tom in the squad is a wonderful achievement.
"Tom is incredibly talented but more importantly, I've seen how hard Tom has worked over the past few years to improve his craft. I am absolutely thrilled his hard work and dedication has paid off.
“I wish Tom the best of luck and I know he’ll have the entire Territory very proud of him and cheering him on.”
NT Cricket Chief Executive Officer Gavin Dovey said Tom’s selection can be incredibly powerful and sets a wonderful example for a younger generation of Territorian cricketers.
“From the moment I met Tom it was clear that his goal is to reach the highest levels of the game, and it has been clear ever since that he is incredibly dedicated in his pursuit of that goal.
“His selection is an outstanding achievement and a wonderful opportunity on that journey. Congratulations to Tom, his family and the Darwin Cricket Club.”
The reciprocal series comes after Australia hosted England in January and February earlier this year. That series saw the two-match 4-Day series drawn 1-1, before Australia claimed the ODI series 2-1 and won the sole T20I.
The Australian Team will be coached by New South Wales Development Coach Anthony Clark, who also led the squad at the 2022 ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.
