Southern Districts have been crowned the Darwin & Districts Cricket Competition Women’s Division 1 T20 champions after a dominant eight-wicket victory over Waratah in the Grand Final at DXC Arena.
Andrew and Armstrong power Southern Districts to Women’s Div 1 Grand Final Win
Batting first, Waratah battled their way to 7/104 from 20 overs, with Melissa Campbell (20\* off 19) and Monet Hunter (27 off 41) providing resistance against a disciplined Crocs bowling unit. Andrea Ellis (2/16) and Kelly Armstrong (2/23) were the chief wicket takers, while Rachel Andrew (1/13 from 4 overs) struck early to dismiss Alice Caldow.
In reply, Districts’ most reliable duo rose to the occasion. Rachel Andrew (55\* off 28) and Hannah Armstrong (37\* off 25) put on a blistering unbeaten stand of 106 to chase down the target with 7.1 overs to spare. Andrew’s innings, featuring nine fours and a six, was a fitting finale to her prolific season, while Armstrong provided the perfect foil with six boundaries of her own.
The result capped off a remarkable season for the Southern District Crocs, who had already beaten Waratah three times in the regular season before sealing the ultimate prize in the decider.
“Rachel and Hannah have been outstanding all season and showed again why they are two of the best in the competition,”
NT Cricket Head of Clubs and Competitions Karl Mayne said.
“Congratulations to Southern Districts on their premiership, and full credit to Waratah who fought their way into the final with a brilliant run through the semis. Women’s cricket in the Top End continues to reach new heights, and Friday’s final was a fantastic showcase of that talent.”
The win continues Districts’ strong run in Territory women’s cricket, while Waratah’s spirited finals campaign, knocking out Tracy Village and Nightcliff, highlighted the depth and competitiveness across the women's divisions.
