NT Cricket, in partnership with AANT, is proud to recognise Melissa Campbell from the Waratah Cricket Club as September’s AANT Volunteer of the Month.
Melissa Campbell named September AANT Volunteer of the Month
Known affectionately as Shorty, Melissa has been a cornerstone of women’s cricket in the Northern Territory, helping grow the game through her leadership, mentorship and unwavering commitment to community. Her passion and drive have inspired countless players to get involved, stay connected and give back to the sport she loves.
Reflecting on her time as a volunteer, Melissa said:
“Being part of community cricket here in Darwin has played such a large part in my love for the Top End. The multicultural environment at Waratah has been so fantastic, and I’ve loved getting to know such a lovely bunch of women over the years from all around the world who, at one point, have called Darwin home.
It’s tough work behind the scenes of sport, I won’t lie, but seeing the competition grow into the competitive comp it was this year, and the introduction of Division 2, has been amazing. It’s so rewarding to know I’ve played a small part in that growth.”
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of sport, and without them, sport simply wouldn’t run. I strongly encourage everyone to get involved with a sport at some point in their life — it really is rewarding.
The most fulfilling moments I’ve had as a volunteer would have to be seeing people’s personal growth through sport. Watching people who might not have many friends, or who are nervous to meet new people, find a safe environment in cricket — and by the end of the season, they’re mates not just with our team, but with players from every club. It’s so amazing to watch.”
Balancing her leadership on the field with her dedication off it, Shorty has helped shape an inclusive and supportive environment that continues to strengthen women’s cricket across the Territory. Whether she’s captaining her team, mentoring emerging players or lending a hand behind the scenes, her consistency and care have made a lasting impression on Waratah Cricket Club and the broader DDCC community.
In addition to her club contributions, Shorty represents the Territory on a national stage as part of Cricket Australia’s Project Inspire — an initiative dedicated to empowering women in cricket leadership roles. Her involvement reflects her passion for creating pathways and opportunities for the next generation, while ensuring female voices remain central to the game’s growth.
Through coaching, community engagement and volunteer work, Shorty continues to set the standard for what it means to give back. Her efforts have been instrumental in building participation, connection and pride within Territory women’s cricket.
NT Cricket and AANT thank Shorty for her outstanding contribution by awarding her a 12-month Premium AANT Membership and a $250 United fuel voucher.
