Northern Territory Cricket would like to congratulate Jake Weatherald on his selection today in Australia’s 15-man Squad for the First Test of the NRMA Ashes Series.
Born and raised in Darwin, Jake attended Stuart Park Primary School and Darwin Middle School, Weatherald relocated to Adelaide as a teenager to continue his cricket development. He progressed steadily through the domestic system, debuting for South Australia in 2016 before moving to Tasmania. Last summer he topped the Sheffield Shield run tally with 906 runs at an average of 50.33. He strengthened his case further with a commanding 183 for Australia A against Sri Lanka A in Darwin in July. These performances resulted in his selection in Australia’s Ashes squad and ultimately a place in the first Test XI.
Jake’s selection in the Ashes Test Squad puts him on the cusp of joining an illustrious group. Since 1877 and over the course of 148 years, there have only been 471 men go on to play Test Cricket for Australia.
NT Cricket CEO Gavin Dovey said:
“We are absolutely thrilled for Jake, and his family, as he moves very close now to becoming the first Northern Territorian to ever wear the Baggy Green cap.
“Jake’s story is one of incredible hard work, sacrifice, courage and resilience to get to this point.
“The entire NT Cricket community is very proud of him and right behind him. Hopefully he gets the final nod into the XI in Perth, he deserves it.”
