Northern Territory Cricket Congratulates Kane Richardson

Northern Territory Cricket would like to congratulate Kane Richardson on his outstanding International, first-class and T20 cricket career following today’s announcement that he will retire from all forms of cricket.

Born in Eudunda, South Australia, Richardson spent much of his childhood in Darwin where he played for Waratah Cricket Club and PINT Cricket Club before representing the Northern Territory at U15s and U17s National Championships.

The right arm fast bowler made his first-class debut for South Australia in 2011 before going on to develop into a world class short format player, culminating in 25 One Day Internationals (Cap: #207) and 36 T20 Internationals (Cap: #71) for Australia including being part of the victorious 2021 T20 World Cup winning team.

Richardson’s best International bowling figures of 5/68 earning him Player of the Match honours in an ODI against India in Canberra in 2016 where he dismissed Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane.

A highly skilled death bowler, Richardson played 34 first-class, 98 List A and over 200 T20 matches for South Australia, Queensland, Melbourne Renegades, Adelaide Strikers, Sydney Sixers and a host of overseas clubs in the Indian Premier League (IPL), ILT20, Hundred and County Cricket.

The 2020 NT Sports Person of the Year was part of the Melbourne Renegades BBL|08 title winning team and finishes his career as the Renegades all-time leading wicket taker (104 wickets from 80 matches).

More recently Kane Richardson returned to Darwin to play for the NT Strike in Northern Territory Cricket’s 2025 Top End T20 Series, joining fellow professional Territorians Jake Weatherald, D’Arcy Short and Tom Andrews.

Kane Richardson:

"I would like to announce my retirement from professional cricket at the conclusion of this BBL," he said. "From making my debut back in 2009 until now, I feel like I have squeezed every drop out of myself and it is the right time to finish such an enjoyable part of my life.

"I would like to thank all the coaches, administrators, and fellow players who have shaped my career, particularly those from my early days in South Australia and the Northern Territory.

"I've been fortunate enough to represent my country, along with many franchise teams around the world, and in Australia. I have never taken the opportunity lightly and I hope the people watching knew that I had dreamt about being a cricketer since I was a kid in Darwin."

NT Cricket CEO Gavin Dovey:

“First and foremost Kane is one of the nicest human beings you will ever meet and having been there with him back in 2013 when he made his debut for Australia, I’m thrilled that’s he’s had such a long and wonderful professional cricket career.

“On behalf of the entire Northern Territory Cricket community I would like to congratulate Kane on everything he has achieved in the game.

“Kane is one of the four best players to ever come through the NT player pathway. He’s been a fantastic ambassador for the Territory and he is a great role model for regional and country kids who may need to take the road less travelled to achieve their dreams.”
