Full-strength Australian squad named for Darwin Test

Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon will return alongside local favourite Jake Weatherald for Australia’s historic Test against Bangladesh at Marrara Stadium.

Australian cricket’s biggest names are heading to Darwin, with a strong 13-player squad confirmed for the opening NRMA Insurance Test against Bangladesh from 13 to 17 August.

Captain Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon have all been named to return from injury, joining Mitchell Starc, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey in a squad packed with international experience.

Northern Territory cricket fans will also have the opportunity to support local Jake Weatherald, who has retained his place in the Australian squad following the retirement of Usman Khawaja.

The match will be the first men’s Test played in the Northern Territory since Australia faced Sri Lanka in Darwin in 2004 and Bangladesh’s first Test tour of Australia since 2003.

Australia’s selectors will have several significant decisions to make before the first ball, including the composition of a bowling attack featuring Cummins, Hazlewood, Lyon, Starc and Scott Boland.

National Selection Panel Chair George Bailey said Cummins, Hazlewood and Lyon had worked extremely hard over recent months to return from their respective injuries.

“While this is a 13-player squad, we have players prepared and available should any adjustments be required in the lead-up to these matches,” Bailey said.

“As previously stated, the volume of cricket and schedule across the next 12 months are likely to present further opportunities across all formats for many players.”

Cameron Green, Beau Webster and Josh Inglis have also been included, providing Australia with several options as selectors consider the make-up of the batting order following Khawaja’s retirement.

The Test will begin at 10am each day, giving Territory fans five days to experience world-class international cricket in Darwin.
