Northern Territory Cricket will celebrate Women & Girls Week from 7 to 13 September, recognising the women and girls who play, volunteer, support and work across the game.
This year’s celebration comes as women and girls’ cricket continues to grow throughout the Territory, supported by new participation opportunities and stronger club competitions.
The Darwin and Districts Cricket Competition recorded a 23.8 per cent increase in women’s registrations in 2026, with 12 teams now competing across Divisions 1 and 2.
Women’s Social Smash, held during the pre-season, contributed to that growth by providing an accessible and social entry point for women who wanted to try cricket or return to the game.
Opportunities for younger participants are also expanding through Girls-Only Colour Blast, a Woolworths Cricket Blast program for girls aged five to 12.
The program introduces girls to cricket in a fun and supportive environment while helping them develop fundamental movement and entry-level cricket skills.
Girls-Only Social Smash provides the next step between introductory programs and structured competition. Modified rules, minimal equipment, female-led sessions and a backyard cricket feel allow participants to build their skills and confidence in a relaxed environment.
In Central Australia, clubs are preparing for the Alice Springs season to begin in October and continuing their work towards establishing a women’s team at every club.
Across the NT, 854 registrations were recorded in entry-level cricket programs during the 2025–26 cricket census year, from April 2025 to April 2026. A further 154 registrations were recorded across Social Smash programs, including dedicated women’s groups.
Women & Girls Week is Cricket Australia’s annual celebration of the women and girls who contribute to cricket at every level and in every role.
Show us how her game grows at your club
As part of Cricket Australia’s Her Game Grows initiative, supported by Westpac, NT clubs are encouraged to share how they are creating opportunities for women and girls.
Each state and territory winner will receive:
- A $1,000 club grant to support the growth of women and girls’ cricket
- A playing shirt signed by Australia’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup-winning team
One national winner will be selected from the state and territory winners and announced on Monday, 16 November. The winning club will receive an additional $2,500 grant to support women and girls’ cricket.
